Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is no longer something we only see in movies.

Today, AI can write emails, analyse data, create images, generate code, answer customer questions and automate repetitive office work.

But this has created an important question for students and freshers:

“If AI can do some of the work, where will I get my first job?”

The answer isn't as simple as “AI will take everyone's job.”

The reality is more interesting.

AI is creating new opportunities, but at the same time, some traditional entry-level work is becoming easier to automate. Recent research has found that AI-related hiring in Asia has so far exceeded AI-related job losses, while demand for entry-level workers has weakened because some routine tasks are being automated.

And India is right at the centre of this transformation.


WHAT IS HAPPENING TO FRESHER JOBS IN INDIA?


India's technology job market is still active, but the type of skills companies want is changing.

According to recent hiring data, overall technology recruitment has continued to grow, while the share of IT hiring going to freshers has declined.

LOGISTICS + AI

CUSTOMER SUPPORT + AI

AI can handle common questions while human employees deal with complicated problems.

So the future opportunity isn't simply about knowing AI.

DO YOU NEED TO BECOME AN AI ENGINEER?


No.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.

If you enjoy programming and mathematics, becoming an AI/ML engineer can be an excellent career direction.

But if coding isn't your strongest area, there are still many ways to work with AI.

7 SKILLS FRESHERS SHOULD START LEARNING


1. AI TOOLS

Learn how modern AI assistants work.

Don't only learn how to ask:

“Write an email.”

Learn how to give context, verify results, improve the output and use AI responsibly.

2. PROMPTING

Prompting is not just about writing fancy sentences.

Good prompting means knowing how to explain:

What you want + why you want it + what information AI has + what format you need.

For example, instead of:

“Make a report.”

Try:

“Analyse this monthly sales data, identify the three biggest changes, explain possible reasons and present the findings in five short bullet points for a manager.”

That's much more useful.

3. DATA SKILLS

You don't necessarily need to become a data scientist.

Start with:

• Excel
• Google Sheets
• Basic data analysis
• Charts
• Basic SQL
• Data visualisation

Then learn how AI can help you analyse information faster.

4. AUTOMATION

Automation could become a particularly useful skill.

Imagine you receive the same type of information every day.

Instead of manually:

Copy → Paste → Format → Email

You could eventually create:

Data arrives → System processes it → AI summarises it → Report is generated

A person who understands this workflow can become valuable even without being a hardcore programmer.

5. PROBLEM-SOLVING

This may sound old-fashioned, but it is becoming even more important.

AI can generate answers.

But it doesn't automatically know whether the answer makes sense for your particular business.

For example, AI may create a customer email.

You need to decide:

Is it accurate?

Is it polite?

Does it follow company policy?

Does it actually solve the customer's problem?

Human judgement still matters.

6. COMMUNICATION

Don't underestimate communication skills.

A person who can:

Understand a problem → Use AI → Verify the answer → Explain it clearly

can be extremely useful.

AI doesn't remove the need for communication.

In many cases, it increases its importance.

7. INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE

This is where you can make yourself different.

Suppose two people know the same AI tools.

One understands AI.

The other understands:

AI + Marketing

AI + Healthcare

The second person has a specific business context.

That combination can be powerful.

A SIMPLE 90-DAY AI CAREER PLAN

You don't need to spend a year learning everything before applying for jobs.

Try a practical three-month approach.

MONTH 1 — UNDERSTAND AI

Learn:

• Generative AI basics
• Prompting
• AI limitations
• Fact-checking AI output
• Responsible AI usage

Use AI every day for small tasks.

MONTH 2 — CHOOSE YOUR INDUSTRY

Pick one area.

For example:

• Finance
• Marketing
• Logistics
• HR
• Customer service
• Software

Then ask:

“Where can AI save time or improve this industry?”

Start building small examples.

MONTH 3 — BUILD A PORTFOLIO

This is where many candidates make a mistake.

They collect certificates but don't build anything.

Instead, create 2–3 small projects.

AI-powered customer email assistant

Project 2:
Excel + AI sales analysis

Project 3:
AI-based daily report generator

You don't need a billion-dollar application.

You need something that demonstrates:

“I can use technology to solve a problem.”

WHAT SHOULD YOU PUT ON YOUR RESUME?

Don't simply write:

“AI Knowledge”

That's too vague.

Instead, explain what you actually did.

Weak:

“Familiar with AI tools.”

Better:

“Used generative AI tools to automate routine report drafting and improve document preparation workflows.”

Even better:

“Built a prototype workflow that uses AI to summarise operational data and generate a structured daily report for review.”

The third statement gives the recruiter something concrete to discuss.

ARE NON-TECH GRADUATES ALSO SAFE?


There is no career that is completely “AI-proof.”

But that doesn't mean non-technical graduates should be afraid.

AI is becoming useful across many industries, including business, operations, finance, marketing, HR and customer service.

The lesson is simple:

Don't ask only:

“Can AI do my job?”

Ask:

“How can AI make me better at my job?”

That's a much more productive question.

A REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE: LOGISTICS

Let's take an example from logistics.

Imagine a logistics executive receives 100 shipment updates every day.

Previously, they might manually read every update and prepare a summary.

With AI and automation, the workflow could become:

The employee hasn't necessarily disappeared.

Their job has changed.

There is one trap I would strongly recommend avoiding.

Don't collect 20 AI certificates without building anything.

A certificate can show that you completed a course.

A project can show that you can actually use what you learned.

For example:

Certificate:

“Generative AI Fundamentals”

Portfolio project:

“Created an AI workflow that converts raw customer feedback into categories, summaries and action points.”

The second gives an interviewer something practical to discuss.

WILL AI REPLACE HUMANS COMPLETELY?

For most jobs, the better question isn't simply:

Human vs AI

It is likely to become:

Human + AI vs Human without AI

Think about calculators.

Calculators didn't eliminate mathematics.

They changed how people perform calculations.

Similarly, spreadsheets didn't eliminate accountants.

They changed how accounting work is performed.

AI is likely to create similar changes across many professions.

Some tasks will disappear.

Some jobs will change.

New jobs will appear.

And some professionals will become much more productive.


WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?


India's AI job market is moving towards more specialised and production-focused roles.

Demand is increasing around areas such as:

• Generative AI
• AI engineering
• AI integration
• MLOps
• AI-led products
• Data and automation

At the same time, traditional entry-level opportunities can become more competitive.

So the future isn't necessarily:

AI = No Jobs

Nor is it:

AI = Unlimited Jobs for Everyone

The more realistic picture is:

AI is changing what companies expect from employees.

And people who adapt early may have an advantage.
